Catching Up With ... Cynthia Preston (SOD online interview, 2007)
Digest: Who do you still keep in touch with from your GH days?
Preston: I am constantly talking to Tamara Braun [ex-Carly]. I talked to Natalia [Livingston, Emily] last night. Alicia [Leigh Willis, ex-Courtney] is on my list of girlfriends. I'm in very close contact with them. I talk to Ted King [ex-Alcazar] and Ric Hearst [Ric]. They're good friends. Rick and his family treat me like an extension of their family and Ted is the salt of the earth.

"I almost like Alicia better with not a lot of makeup on," says Kramer. "She's so California, sun-kissed, beach girl that I almost think it's a shame to hide those features. So we use a light Revlon Defusing Tinted Moisturizer on her face. Then a little loose powder. Usually some kind of pinks or peaches or smoky browns for her eyes. We use a lot of Stila on her. We usually use a natural, flesh-tone pencil on her lips. She uses a lot of those Lancome Juicy Tubes.

Question: What's your fashion pet peeve?
"People are wearing tapered jeans again, the highwaisted '80s jeans. That just doesn't do it for me. I think they're hideous. - Alicia Leigh Willis

"I love CSI. I watch because I like the drama and how they go about solving the crimes." - Alicia Liegh Willis

Do you have any interesting scars? How did you come by them?
"I have a scar on my arm. When I was 8, my sister and I were riding a quad four wheeler in Texas. We were turning around and flipped over in a ditch and landed on a barb wire fence and kept going. It kind of stuck and cut us both open. She had scars up her arm, but weren't as bad as mine. Mine went all the way down." - Alicia Leigh Willis

What's the best April Fool's joke you've been involved in?
Alicia Leigh Willis says "When I was on vacation in Fiji, some guys got a bucketful of live crabs and stuck them in my room. Then they put sand on the ceiling fan. So when I came into the room and turned on the light, the sand went everywhere and the crabs were crawling all over the place. The entire trip I was freaking out. I couldn't sleep because crabs were comiing out of everywhere. It was horrible."

What do you use the internet for?
Alicia Leigh Willis says "I mostly use the computer for my email, because I have a hard time sitting still. Tamara Braun and I email each other a lot. She usually sends me interesting things that she finds, little inspiring notes. I usually send her stupid jokes. She sends the inspiring things and I send the dirty jokes."

Good friends Tamara Braun (Carly, GH) nominated for Lead Actress, and Alicia Leigh Willis (Courtney, GH), nominated for Younger Actress, were joinjed at the hip all night. "I can't think of anyone more deserving of this nomination," Willis shared of Braun. "She amazes me."

Where do you like to bargain shop?
Alicia Leigh Willis (Courtney, GH) beams, "I just went shopping at the Desert Hills Premium Outlets [near] Palm Springs [CA]: They're so great! It's amazing. I saw a ton of stuff I have in my wardrobe here for half the price. I love [Elle] Tahari; and I got a bag of Yves Saint Lourent for so much less than it would have cost at a normal boutique."

"I remember I had a love scene where Billy Warlock [ex-AJ] took off my shirt, and I just happened to be in a shirt that was not very easy to get off! You had to untie the many ties one by one. It was supposed to be this romantic scene, but it ended up being so slow where Billy was untying one after the other, after the other and then trying to get the string out. We were laughing by the end; it turned into comedy [laughs]."

Which of your co-stars influences you the most fashionwise?Alicia Leigh Willis (Courtney, GH)
I'd have to say Tamara Braun (Carly)< because we are such close friends. When we go out we always get each other's opinions on what we're wearing. SHe's got two sides. SHe's either very casual or very sophisticated. She wears everythng so well. It's not even just the clothes, it's the way she wears them.

Boxing and surfing are great ways to tone up your arms. I box three times a week. Sometimes my trainer and I will [spar], but I try not to do that too much because I don't want to get hit. Surfing is good, too, because of the paddling.

I also read The Bell Jar [by Sylvia Plath], and now I'm in the middle of Wintering: A Novel of Sylvia Plath, by Kate Moses. I'd like to finish it, then see Sylvia [Gwyneth Paltrow] to find out how they compare. Sylvia Plath is fascinating." [SOD]

"Tamara Braun (Carly): We were in Hawaii at the same time, and she's one of my closest friends here. So I'd definitely want to go on vacation with her -- have a girlfriend trip. It would be fun because we like a lot of the same things. - Alicia Leigh Willis (Courtney, GH)

What daily beauty ritual do you wish you didn't have to follow every day?
"Probably a flat iron when I get to work, because I hate doing that kind of damage to my hair. [The show's hairdressers] use it on me every day to make my hair extra straight." - Alicia Leigh Willis

"Everyone says they are so hot and oh, they are so cool - but when the camera isn't rolling" Alicia and I are like "They're the biggest dorks if you came on-set" (laughs) "They're so goofy. Now, Alicia she gets the giggles a lot. And so, we'll get going. But Maurice and Steve get the giggles too. I am not talking they just laugh..they get the giggles. They're like school girls. And so, it's fun to get a rise out of them and to watch them do that sometimes" - Tamara Bruan

What are your New Year's resolutions? - Willis: "My New Year's resolution is always the same thing. I have a little bit of a potty mouth, so it's always to stop [cursing] -- it never really works, though [laughs]."

Courtney's noshing at Kelly's Diner has, in a roundabout way, saved the health of a teenager or two out there in the real world, Alicia Leigh Willis learned recently when she was approached by a teacher who told her that her character and Carly's eating habits were having a positive influence on her students. "She said that she was teaching preteens and all the girls were already starting to diet and starve themselves and have eating disorders," Willis relates. "They wouldn't eat lunch, so she was really worried about them. Then one day she saw these two girls who were really bad, but they were eating lunch finally for the first time. The teacher told them, "I'm so glad you're eating," and they said, "Yeah, well, we can eat because Courtney and Carly eat all the time on GH."

Alicia Leigh Willis (Courtney) had no problem kicking it up a notch in high school as a member of the soccer team. "I didn't love high school very much," she shares. "I liked playing all of my sports and stuff, but I was ready to graduate the second I started [laughs]

X Marks The Spot:
Think it's all fun and games at the GH's set? Well, you're partially right. Alicia Leigh Willis (Courtney) unwinds with an Xbox video game. "Tony Hawk's Pro Skater is my favorite game ever!" she raves. If I'm not studying lines, I'll play it." She's not the only one. "I hear Steve [Burton, Jason] and everybody,... They bang on the walls because their playing PlayStation. I'll be trying to take a nap and I'll freak out!"
- Being the Jennifer (Garner) Alias of daytime is a tough job, but Alicia Leigh Willis (Courtney) whose General Hospital alter ego has smaked, punched and drop-kicked more people than her mobster brother, Sonny, relishes every moment of it. "The guys are always making fun of me and giving me a hard time about it," laughs Willis, who's been dubbed "Kung Fu Courtney." Who would the actress really love rough up? "Probably Alcazer", muses Willis. "He's the person Courtney hates the most."

Clean up Act: Though fully functioning showers are available to the actors at the studio, Alicia Leigh Willis (Courtney) admits that she only uses them when absolutely necessary. "They're in the bathrooms, and they're a little spooky," explains the actress. "But if I go and work out before (taping), I have to freshen up. Steve (Burton, Jason) will freak out if we have scenes together and I'm stinky (laughs)."

"It's so funny because before I came to GH, I was such a fan of Maurice. I loved Sonny. I was like, 'Oh, my God, he's so hot, and he's such a good actor.' That was before I was on the show. Now, I know him, and it's totally changed. No, I'm just kidding!"

What's Your Favorite GH Memory?

Seeing Genie Francis (ex-Laura) do those scenes with Tony Geary during Laura's breakdown.l We knew that she was leaving, and I think a lot of that came out in the scenes. Just watching that was the most heartbreaking thing I've ever seen. It was amazing, the two of them together, and I think that was my favorite memory.

How Does Your Personal Style Differ From Your Character's?

We both wear jeans and we're both casual, but I don't really like pastels. I have a lot of black tank tops and T-shirts, and a lot of surf clothes because my brother and boyfriend (who both work for a surfer clothing company) give me free clothes.

About five minutes ago, because that's all that Steve [Burton, Jason, inset] does. I'm just kidding. I'm a little goofy, so I'm always getting made fun of. Steve likes to pick on me. He's like a big brother. But it's all in fun. He walked in this morning and when they do my hair sometimes, they put it up in these giant rollers. So, my head is all in these huge rollers and he laughed at me"
